Back to the Future

It’s the 21st century, aren’t we supposed to be riding around in flying cars by now? Apparently not, but photographer Renaud Marion isn’t letting reality get in the way. For his project “Air Drive” he digitally altered images of classic 1950’s and 60’s cars, creating the illusion of them hovering off the ground. 21st century automobiles may be safer and more efficient – but they can’t touch these beauties for style. The architectural backgrounds are great too.

Elke Walter @ Zaha Hadid Design Gallery

Elke Walter 4

Our friend, fashion designer Elke Walter, will be exhibiting and selling her work at the Zaha Hadid Design Gallery in London from November 21 thru 23. Architect and designer Zaha Hadid is not only an avid wearer of Elke’s designs, she’s a kindred spirit – both women have a boldly modern point of view and a strong sculptural influence in their work.

As strikingly beautiful as Elke’s clothes are, they are equally practical. They can be adjusted to fit any body size or shape, and the high tech synthetic fabrics are extremely comfortable and never crease.

Among Hadid’s high profile projects are stadiums for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and the 2022 Qatar World Cup.

Locals Only?

Now this is sick (and not in a good way). A skateboard covered in python skin by fashion designer Gelareh Mizrahi. It’s called Ride or Die, and sells for $1,700.

Fashion designers taking inspiration from street culture is nothing new. But this could be the nadir. I mean could it be any farther from the origins of skate culture?

One reason this gets under my skin is I grew up in 1970’s coastal Southern California, where skateboarding culture was born. It’s been on my mind a lot since I picked up the outstanding book Locals Only: California Skateboarding 1975-1978 on my recent visit to The Last Bookstore (see previous post). Published by the excellent Ammo (American Modern) Books, with great photos by Hugh Holland of scraggly longhaired kids with no shirts and/or shoes, tearing it up in empty swimming pools, drainage bowls, or any paved surface. Brings back a lot of memories.

Trainspotting

BR Steam Locomotive 73075 – Standard Class 5
Built: 4/30/1955
Builder: Derby Works (British Rail)
Designed by Robert A. Riddles

Above are the vitals listed on the back of this cool painting I picked up for 25 pounds in an antiques mall in Eccleston, Lancashire (home of Tour de France winner Bradley “Wiggo” Wiggins).

I love the color palette of green and black with pops of red – it’s very striking and creates a noirish mood.
